Southern California Snowshoeing
Snowshoe With the Big Trees in Sequoia & Kings Canyon
With easy access to pristine winter terrain and well-marked trails to crunch through groves of big trees, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks is a great place to snowshoe. Walking among giant sequoias, red-orange trunks staked into a base of pure white snow, is an unforgettable visual - some say spiritual - experience.
So, give snowshoeing a go! It's really pretty easy (if you can walk, you can snowshoe) and the new, high-tech gear is very cool. For kids who'd like to try the sport, snowshoes make their time on the trail even more fun!
Ranger-guided Sequoia & Kings Canyon snowshoeing walks are offered in Giant Forest on weekends when conditions permit. The park provides snowshoes free for the two-hour, one-mile guided walks in Giant Forest and Grant Grove. Group size is limited, so plan your Northern California snowshoeing adventure early. To reserve your place for the Giant Forest walk, just go to any visitor center or call 559-565-4480. Advance reservations for both walks are strongly recommended.
Guided Snowshoe Walks in Sequoia and Kings Canyon
Rangers in both Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks lead snowshoe walks and provide the snowshoes. These walks are usually 1:30 and go for about a mile. Check the National Park Service website for the current schedule of ranger-led programs.
In addition to ranger walks and snowshoeing on your own, you can join naturalists from the Sequoia Parks Conservancy. Really get to know the park like an insider by joining one of the SPC's expert naturalists for a snowshoe walk. For a schedule, please consult the calendar on the Explore Sequoia & Kings Canyon website.
Snowshoe Rentals
Snowshoe rentals are available at Grant Grove and Lodgepole.
