Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks' Giant Forest shuttle begins its third season of service today.
The shuttle was 20 years in planning as a means of encouraging visitor enjoyment of one of the nation's cherished wild places. While reducing traffic and air pollution, it offers the added advantage of protecting wildlife. The shuttle takes visitors to many of the key features in one of the parks' signature sites, the Giant Forest, while reducing the need to drive and look for parking places in some crowded areas.
As in the two previous years of operation, two shuttle routes run within the Giant Forest area - the Giant Forest Route and the Moro Rock/Crescent Meadow Route. Both start at the Giant Forest Museum.
The Giant Forest Route follows the Generals Highway, the main park road, from the museum to Wuksachi Village®. Along the way, it makes stops at the wheelchair-accessible trail to the General Sherman Tree, as well as at the main Sherman Tree Parking and Trail. The park recommends that visitors park here and enjoy the walk to this world-famous wonder, then get on the shuttle to ride to their next destination.
The shuttle also stops at Lodgepole Visitor Center and Market and at the Lodgepole Campground. Visitors may also park at the campground or at the Giant Forest Museum before getting on the shuttle It will operate daily beginning today and continuing through Labor Day, September 14th, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Riding the shuttle system in Giant Forest offers to visitors a whole new way of experiencing one of the most important features of Sequoia National Park. Last season, it was one of the most-used shuttles in national parks.
For more information about the shuttle and about how to connect to it via the city of Visalia's shuttle to the park, see www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit or http://www.sequoiashuttle.com/.
