John Muir Lodge
John Muir Lodge Lobby
The pinnacle of Kings Canyon lodging, the John Muir Lodge is a stone-and-timber retreat located in Grant Grove Village and within minutes of historic Grant Grove and its towering forest of giant sequoias.
Open year-round, the John Muir Lodge serves California national park visitors with 36 rooms in Kings Canyon National Park. It is named for the famed Scottish author/naturalist who sought to preserve this High Sierra realm and advocated the designation of Sequoia & King Canyon as national parks. A painting of Muir, gazing out on the wilderness that stirred him, adorns the lobby of the property, and continues to inspire modern-day Muirs.
Built in 1998, the John Muir Lodge is an excellent Kings Canyon lodging choice for visitors who want quiet, comfortable, national park accommodations. It features rough-hewn, open beam ceilings, stone fireplace, and a redwood mantel salvaged from a historic cabin in Sequoia National Park. Lodge guests can enjoy games, puzzles, and books in the lobby great room while relaxing by the stone fireplace. Public balconies at the west end of the lodge provide the perfect place to savor the Sierra sunset with friends and family.
Free Wi-Fi is also available in all public spaces. The Lodge’s guest rooms are set with hand crafted wood furniture in a bright and natural light-filled atmosphere. Come evening there is often a glowing fire burning in the fireplace, with guests relaxing in corners of the great room, sharing their day’s adventures. Several porches with chairs and rockers also offer comfortable opportunities for discourse in the fresh mountain air. The family-friendly Grant Grove Restaurant next to the John Muir Lodge features American cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with an espresso bar on the patio.

John Muir Lodge Gets a Brand-New Look
Kings Canyon’s iconic John Muir Lodge has been hosting travelers for nearly two decades in classic and comfortable style, but recently, it was time to give the welcoming lodge a fresh update. In all 36 rooms, Darden Architects leveraged about $400,000 to change everything from carpeting, bedding and window treatments to headboards, lounge chairs and fans. New walls make way for soundproofing so guests can enjoy the whisper of the wind – not sounds of their neighbors – and ensure the sound from new flat-screen TVs stays with its intended audience.
In keeping with Delaware North’s GreenPath philosophy, all furniture, carpeting, fabric and blinds are eco-conscious. Much of the wood furniture is built from sustainable wood sourced from hickory saplings that would not be able to grow healthily in nature and would have to be removed, while other pieces are constructed from reclaimed wood. Fabrics are also handpicked from an environmentally dedicated vendor. “We wanted to choose items that look like they’ve been there, not just thrown in as part of a new update,” explained Darden Architects’ DeDe Darnell. It was very important to the firm and John Muir Lodge team to maintain the integrity of the lodge and its surroundings, as well as add to the guest experience with a warm aesthetic that speaks to the beauty of the park.
Updates also include works from local artist Jane Ziegler, who knows a thing or two about making John Muir Lodge feel like home – she works at the neighboring Grant Grove gift shop. Jane gains a great deal of inspiration from the surrounding scenery of Kings Canyon, and Darden Architects worked with her to choose 24 prints featuring vistas that return guests would easily recognize or first-timers would want to visit. We hope you will enjoy the new John Muir Lodge.
